What to expect during your newborn photography session

Before your newborn session:

When should I book my newborn photography session?

The earlier the better! I only take a few newborns a month. It is not uncommon for a client to schedule her newborn session 3 months in advance. Occasionally I have openings for last-minute sessions, but I make no guarantees 🙂

What if my baby is early or late? How do we set a date?

I know that very few babies (5% to be exact) are born on their due date. That is why we book a tentative session date based on your due date and revise it after you give birth. I ask that you contact me in the first couple days after your little one arrives and we will finalize a date. If you are having a scheduled induction or c-section, we can set the date ahead of time.

When is the best time to have my newborn photographed?

The best time to photograph a newborn baby is between 6-10 days old. At this age, they are very sleepy, tiny and can curl into the beautiful newborn poses you see in my portfolio.

Where are your photography sessions held?

I come to your home! I want to make your life as easy as possible and I know it is really tough to get out of your house with a newborn. I want you to relax while I do all the work 🙂 I bring a studio setup with lighting, backdrops, props, outfits, hats, bonnets, headbands...absolutely everything necessary for the session.

What can I expect from you?

From the beginning, I am here to answer any questions you may have and to guide you through the entire process. I will make sure you have all of your questions answered and know what to expect from me before you book your session. After you book, we will do a pre-session consultation over the phone or by email (whichever works best for you). I will design your session around your needs and will keep you involved in the process. You will have access to all of my props. I will come to your home for your session and about 2-3 weeks after your session, I will return to present your images to you. At that time you will decide which images you want in digital form and which you want on your products. Lastly, all of your final products will be delivered to your home and I will make sure everything is to your expectations.

Day of your newborn session:

How long is a newborn photography session?

Newborn sessions typically last about 3-4 hours, which includes the time it takes me to set up and break down my equipment. I create a calm and relaxing environment and I promise that end result is well worth the time 🙂 Please know that I do not mind waiting for you to nurse, change, or soothe your little one.

What should I have on hand?

I bring everything necessary for the session. You just want to have some basics such as extra diapers, wipes, and a pacifier (if you use one) on hand.

How do I prepare for your arrival?

A couple days before the session, I will send you an email with everything you need to know to prepare for the session. It includes information such as how to prepare your baby, when to feed them before the session, what to wear, and some small tips on creating the best environment for the session.

What should my baby wear?

Just their birthday suit! Well, I usually start the session with them wrapped and in a diaper, and I provide everything else necessary for the session. I will get an idea of what you want before the session and I will choose from my extensive prop selection what I think will fit best with your preferences. I have many, many outfits, hats, bonnets and headbands to choose from and I will bring many choices with me to your session. (PS. I may have a prop problem!)

And me?

If you would like to be in photos with your little one, and I sincerely hope that you do, I feel that a solid-colored, neutral shirt works best. Shirts with strong patterns or logos can distract from the baby in the images. This is true for everyone you want to have in the images.

I want pictures taken with a family heirloom or blanket that my mom made for the baby. Is that ok?

Of course!! I would be happy to fit your special items into the session!

After your newborn session:

When do I get to see my final images?

About 3 weeks after your session, I will come back to your home and present a slideshow of your images set to music. You then get to decide which digital images you would like and which images you would like on your birth announcements and other products. You have the option to purchase add-ons to your package at a discounted price. If you are not sure which images will look best hanging in your home, I can also help you decide.

What products do you offer?

I offer digital images, gift prints, gallery wrapped canvases, heirloom quality albums, a beautiful video of your images set to music, custom birth announcements and holiday cards. I sometimes offer seasonal products and if you are looking for something specific that is not on my list of offerings, I would be happy to give you a price quote.

How do I get my final products?

They will be delivered directly to your home. Most products are delivered to you about 2-3 weeks after your viewing session. It could be longer for some custom products such as albums, which could take up to 8 weeks.

I hope I have answered all of your questions but please feel free to write me with any other questions you have. I look forward to hearing from you!
